When people talk about the dental procedures that patients dread the most, root canals somehow always top the list. For some reason, they’ve gotten a reputation as painful, invasive procedures that leave patients wincing.

It may be a good idea to have an honest conversation about discomfort associated with root canal treatment, and whether there’s anything for you to worry about. Here’s what you should know.

Are Root Canals Painful?

The truth is that while root canals have certainly garnered a reputation as being an uncomfortable procedure, the treatment itself is actually entirely painless. Before doing anything, your dentist is going to use powerful local anesthetics to numb your mouth completely. The most you’re likely to feel during the root canal is a little bit of pressure on your tooth.

The idea that root canals are uniquely unpleasant may come from an era when dental anesthetics weren’t all that powerful—thankfully, that isn’t the case today.

What About Aftercare?

The only time root canal patients feel any discomfort at all is after the procedure when the anesthetics wear off and the tooth is healing. At this point, it’s normal for the tooth to be a little bit sensitive, especially when eating or drinking.

This tenderness should last a week or two at most so long as you don’t put too much strain on your tooth. Make it a point to chew on the other side of your mouth, and don’t do anything to disrupt the dental crown. By taking over-the-counter pain relievers as directed you should be able to make it through this sensitive period without any problems.

Why are Root Canals Important?

It’s a shame that so many people are intimidated by root canals considering they’re typically used in situations where a tooth is otherwise beyond saving. Root canals treat severely infected teeth by removing the pulp from within them—if a tooth has become diseased to this extent, the only other option is usually extraction.

If your dentist recommends a root canal for you, you shouldn’t let anxiety stand in the way. The truth about root canals is that they’re nothing to be scared of, and can make a huge difference in your life if you let them.
