American culture is often influenced by the portrayal of certain characters in movies and television shows. This can include the common fear of dentists! While these depictions can be entertaining, they can instill a false narrative about dental professionals and cause people to avoid caring for their teeth with necessary preventive care. Read on to learn more about the entertainment industry and the fear of dentists…and what you can do to alleviate any dental anxiety.

Scary Dentists in Popular Films & Sitcoms

Many genres in the entertainment field have featured dentists most people would avoid. From suspense and comedy films to popular sitcoms, here are a few examples of how they have been portrayed:

  • Horrible Bosses – While Jennifer Aniston is often known for her endearing roles, she is a manipulative and aggressive dentist in this comedy. Her character abuses her power by blackmailing and harassing one of her employees, even while performing dental procedures!
  • Marathon Man – Oscar-award winners Dustin Hoffman and Sir Laurence Olivier star in this 1976 suspense-thriller film where a man is tortured by a Nazi war-criminal dentist.
  • Little Shop of Horrors – This popular 1986 musical featured Steve Martin. He plays a sadistic dentist who joyfully inflicts pain on his patients. Luckily, he gets eaten by the Audrey II plant from outer space!
  • Friends – Even this popular 90s sitcom couldn’t resist featuring an untrustworthy dental professional! In an episode called “The One with the Evil Orthodontist”, Rachel finds out her ex is still dating her former best friend.

The Reality & How to Overcome Dental Anxiety

While most people are aware these depictions are just characters, they can subconsciously support a fear of dentists. In truth, the majority of those in the dental field want to positively impact the lives of others by caring for their oral health. A more accurate example would be Hermey, the Dentist Elf from the 1964 classic Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer!

However, if you still find yourself avoiding appointments, sedation dentistry may be a perfect solution for you! The treatments can include:

  • Nitrous Oxide – This is the best option for those who have mild levels of anxiety. Once the gas is gently inhaled, any nervousness is alleviated. This sedation also quickly wears off so you can easily continue with your day!
  • Oral Conscious Sedation – By taking a prescribed medication prior to your appointment, you will feel incredibly relaxed throughout your treatment. This helps with moderate dental anxiety and will require a loved one to drive you to and from your visit.
  • IV Sedation – If you suffer from a severe phobia of dental visits or you just find it difficult to sit in an examination chair for extended periods of time, this therapy would be best for you. The sedation is administered intravenously and will take several hours for the effects to wear off.

A big part of keeping your smile whole and healthy is visiting your dentist for a checkup. By being aware of your dental anxieties and the treatments available, you can keep your pearly whites picture-perfect!
