If you’ve ever experienced a dental emergency, you know how stressful they can be. On top of needing to make choices in order to get urgent care, you are also likely to feel pain and discomfort. It isn’t fun for anybody. Fortunately, many dental emergencies can easily be avoided by taking preventive steps. Continue reading to learn some ways that you can keep your smile safe and avoid the need for emergency dental care.

Notice Dental Pain

When you’re feeling pain in your mouth, this is generally a sign that something isn’t right. This could be indicating that you have a cavity, loose filling, or another issue. If you have a nagging toothache that suddenly disappears, don’t cancel your plans to see your dentist. This could be the result of a severe tooth infection that has killed the nerve in the center of the tooth. The sooner you see your dentist for issues related to pain, the better.

Maintain Good Oral Hygiene

When you are keeping up with good oral hygiene, you are preventing all sorts of oral health issues in the future. Every day, remember to brush twice using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste for at least two minutes. You should also floss daily in order to remove plaque and food debris from hard to reach places.

Reduce Your Sugar Intake

If you’re frequently snacking on sugary treats, you will have an increase of acidity in your mouth. This is because the bacteria in your mouth use sugar for energy and produce acid as a by-product. This acid will then attack the tooth enamel and leave you with erosion and decay in the future.

Wear a Mouthguard

It’s great to get outside and play sports, but it can put you at risk for cracked, chipped, and even knocked-out teeth. By wearing a custom-made mouthguard from your dentist, you can keep your teeth safe from dental injuries.

Stay Hydrated

Water is necessary for your body to function properly, including your smile. You need to stay hydrated so you can produce enough saliva for maintaining your oral health. Saliva helps to neutralize harmful acids and wash away food particles, therefore reducing your risk for decay.

See Your Dentist

Continue to see your dentist every six months for regular cleanings and checkups. By finding and treating small issues early on, you can avoid having dental emergencies in the future. This means avoiding costly treatments and discomfort.

While you’re going about your busy life, remember to think of your smile. By taking these preventive steps, you will be able to keep it healthy and safe.
